Taking a lesson from The Velveteen Rabbit

Excerpt From "The Velveteen Rabbit" Margery Williams

"What is REAL?" asked the Rabbit one day, when they were lying side by side near the nursery fender, before Nana came to tidy the room. "Does it mean having things that buzz inside you and a stick-out handle?" "Real isn't how you are made," said the Skin Horse. "It's a thing that happens to you. When a child loves you for a long, long time, not just to play with, but Really loves you, then you become Real." "Does it hurt?" asked the Rabbit. "Sometimes," said the Skin Horse, for he was always truthful. "When you are Real you don't mind being hurt." "Does it happen all at once, like being wound up," he asked, "or bit by bit?" "It doesn't happen all at once," said the Skin Horse. "You become. It takes a long time. That's why it doesn't happen often to people who break easily, or have sharp edges, or who have to be carefully kept. Generally, by the time you are Real, most of your hair has been loved off, and your eyes drop out and you get all loose in the joints and very shabby. But these things don't matter at all, because once you are Real you can't be ugly, except to people who don't understand."

Finding my "summer" drink

Each year I give myself a secret mission. In a very Mission Impossible style: my mission (which I always choose to accept) is to find THE drink of Summer. The signature drink that will be ordered first to kick start the evening with an injection of summer fun. The drink must excel my standard tipples and become cherished as the drink of *insert year here*. It must quench a thirst on a humid afternoon by being refreshingly cool in both the practical and fashionable way. 

This year, the search for the signature drink of summer 2009 was astoundingly unsuccessful. Like a fox on the hunt I searched high and low across the field of Sydney bars chasing my prize. I sipped vodkas, sloshed scotch and had a grand old time on the cherished wines- but never seemed to find THE one. Finally, on a wintery evening last Saturday the mission was completed albeit a few months late. 

I present to you the signature drink of "Summer" 2009: 

HENDRICK'S TONIC 

2 oz Hendrick's Gin 

Tonic Water

Served in a highball glass garnished with cucumber.

The Ruby Slipper Collection

In the first ever post of Love Your Ruby Slippers, it seems very appropriate that the Wizard of Oz is celebrating its 70th Anniversary.
